WELCOME TO BARMUN XVII!

Esteemed Delegates,

Welcome to the seventeenth iteration of BarMUN: a premier Model United Nations conference carefully crafted to provide opportunities for connection, growth, and community. Alongside our talented conference staffers and secretariat, the Boston University International Affairs Association presents BarMUN XVII, where we hope delegates are able to grow as they engage in forms of diplomacy while facing strong competition and meeting delegates from across the world. The conference directors alongside the rest of the BarMUN XVII secretariat are eager to welcome you to the historic Hilton Boston Park Plaza this October 10th to 13th as we are working to create a unique conference experience that offers delegates a chance to develop themselves both in the world of model UN and in their respective global perspectives.

As we approach BarMUN weekend, we are excited to present 18 unique committee experiences, which represent a divergent array of time periods, histories, perspectives, and ideas. This year, we have taken a unique spin on our traditional General Assembly committee where delegates face challenging issues as members of The International Criminal Police Organization. We also have our traditional ECOSOC committees and the newly added Specialized committees, both providing delegates with a myriad of opportunities to learn more about state politics, humanitarian issues in legal contexts, and more. BarMUN XVII’s Crisis committees elevate ideas of creativity to the next level where delegates can place themselves in the past, present, or future and find remarkable experiences as they participate in debate. In addition to these committees, we are excited to also offer our annual National Security Council committee and Ad Hoc committees in both crisis and specialized styles.

This year, our theme is Set Sail for Change, an idea that embodies the work the secretariat has done, our goals for the conference, and our vision for the future of BarMUN. As we have faced developing uncertainties across the world whether it be with political conditions or social standings, it is clear that a constant in these experiences is the guarantee of uncertainty. This is why BarMUN’s seventeenth iteration is setting sail in the direction of change, where we have taken risks in our creative direction and leaned into this uncertainty with hope for discovery in our diplomatic exploration. As we confront these developing uncertainties with a sense of determination in debate during committee, BarMUN aims to encourage delegates to embrace change and use it as a powerful tool to face injustice, discrimination, and threats to human rights both inside the committee room and outside in our global community.

Our conference is looking forward to creating its most impactful iteration thus far, and our Secretariat is beyond excited to create an amazing experience for you and your delegation. Whether this is your delegation’s first BarMUN or its seventeenth, we are so excited to bring you along for the ride. As BarMUN approaches, we are counting down the days until we welcome you all to the beautiful city of Boston.

Should you have any questions regarding our conference, please feel free to reach out to us at sg@barmun.org or dg@barmun.org. Our Director of Delegate Affairs is also ready and willing to assist you with any questions you may have; you can reach her at affairs@barmun.org. We hope to see you soon!

Land Acknowledgment

BarMUN XVII, hosted in close alignment with Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, recognizes the land that the City of Boston and Boston University lie on and its historical connection to several indigenous groups, including the Wampanoag and the Massachusett peoples. In addition, we recognize and respect the connections these groups held to other indigenous nations located throughout the region, as they continue to shape Boston, its history, and its people into the place we love today. While Indigenous Peoples’ Day in particular honors the history of our ancestors, the BarMUN Secretariat understands that this statement does not undo the harm inflicted upon these peoples and their land over several centuries. We thus encourage our community to educate themselves upon our past injustices, and remain accountable to them, on this day and every day.
