ABOUT THE UNSC IN WESTERN SAHARA

The date: September 1988. The topic: independence in the Western Sahara. Spain has just withdrawn from the region, leaving a power vacuum for the forces left on the ground. In this simulation of the United Nations Security Council, delegates will play the role of security council members mediating conflict between the Kingdom of Morocco and the indigenous Sahrawi people, represented by the Polisario Front. Delegates must maintain peace on the ground amidst a backdrop of decolonization. Delegates must simultaneously handle territorial disputes, strategic trade relationships, and international law restrictions while charting a path toward democracy. Will the UNSC be able to bring stability to the Western Sahara and create a lasting framework for peace among its people?
